MISSION STATEMENT

As Yoga comes of age in America, there will be an increasing need for the expertise and experience of well educated and trained professional instructors who will be teaching in a wide range of settings including hospitals, studios, health clubs, private industry and corporate wellness programs. As we continue into the 21st century, wellness and preventative programs will grow at a rapid rate and the demand for certified professional instructors will grow as well. More and more of these programs will incorporate yoga as an essential component of their approach to wellness.

The mission of the Precision Alignment Yoga program is to prepare those individuals – who are seeking an in depth academic, as well as practical, formal education in the art and science of yoga instruction - with the knowledge and skills which they will need to meet the demands of this rigorous profession. Certification will provide for those completing all requirements the necessary credentials to teach in both private and public institutions with a variety of people of various ages and abilities. Our Mission is not only to provide a nationally recognized training program and well respected certification, but just as importantly, to offer the integrity of a balanced classical education for each participant. Therefore, each student will receive personal attention and guidance. The program sets a standard of the highest quality for our graduates.

We believe the commitment to the personal practices of Asana, Pranayama, Yamas and Niyamas is essential to the professional and personal growth of each individual in our program. Our hope is that each participant will be inspired to earnestly pursue these ends of professional development and personal growth in order to maintain the ongoing focus of creating balance, peace of mind and wholeness, both internally and externally. We each have the opportunity in this moment in time to examine our lives, our work, our hearts and know that we are collectively setting the course for the 21st century.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

AND HISTORY OF
Precision Alignment Yoga

The Precision Alignment Yoga is a community based program, encouraging participants to work together in developing a strong, vital and supportive, non-competitive learning environment. The program offers a unique opportunity to study and practice, under expert guidance, the elements of Asana, Anatomy/physiology, Yoga philosophy, Pranayama, Ayurveda and Sanskrit. Even though this program is an academic/experiential program, there are no grades but rather an atmosphere which encourages participants to develop their own unique gifts and talents while learning a very precise method of teaching yoga, called "Precision Alignment Yoga", created by Southern Institute for Yoga Instructors.

The earlier roots of Southern Institute for Yoga Instructors began at The Yoga Room of Nashville in the mid-eighties when Betty Larsen began an informal Teacher Training program by offering a teacher’s class once a week. This continued for many years as a type of mentorship program with no certificates awarded. Only a handful of teachers went through this program. However, all of them are still teaching in different parts of the country and have subsequently been awarded the SIYI certificate.

In the late nineties, Betty Larsen and John Charping were encouraged by local teachers in the Nashville area to develop a formal program. As a result, the Southern Institute for Yoga Instructors came into existence. Since it’s inception, there have been a total of 107 graduates certified by SIYI at the 1,000, 330 hour level or Advanced Teacher Trainer level. There are now SIYI teachers in sixteen states including Alabama, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, New York, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia; with graduates also teaching abroad in Switzerland and Canada.

Once again, at the request and encouragement of local teachers/students of Nicole Brown, we are entering a new phase of teacher training at Paducah Yoga Center. This is the first time we are offering a 300 hour program in Paducah, taught weekly and with weekend intensives in a similar fashion as in the earlier days, but with a fully developed curriculum based on our many years of experience in training and certifying yoga teachers. We will be enrolling a small group in this 2011/12 Paducah class, as we have never been interested in producing a large number of teachers, but rather work with small numbers to provide the highest quality yoga teacher training and education possible.

SIYI is in the process transferring 'Directorship' from John and Betty to Emma Trantor, ERYT 500, and needing to re-apply for registering SIYI with the National Yoga Alliance. This process is still pending, yet graduates will be able to personally apply with great confidence that registration will be granted, due to SIYI's curriculum is completely set up based on Yoga Alliance's requirements, and has previously been a registered school for many years.
