What is Reiki?

Reiki is for everyone.

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is an Energy Therapy, (as defined by the Mayo Clinic), that promotes good health through relaxation, stress relief and pain management. Reiki Energy is known as "universal life force energy".

Reiki originated in Japan and was brought to this country in the mid-late 20th century. It is used in many respected medical facilities such as Vanderbilt, Mayo Clinic, Kosairs and Hospice. It is also used by millions of individuals around the world.

Reiki is a holistic way in which to balance the body's energy systems. When the body's energy is in balance it knows how to relax and promote it's own natural healing.

Reiki can be learned by anyone and can be used for self-care as well as to encourage relaxation, stress reduction and healing in others. For some Reiki is a science, for others a spiritual path. Either, or a combination of both, are an accurate and appropriate approach to this natural way to work with the bodies ability to take care of itself.

Many refer to Reiki as "hands on healing." Others refer to it as energy work. Both help describe this modality that is a non-invasive tool for holistic health care that is pleasant to give and receive.

What to expect at a Reiki Healing session

Session Time

The time span of a Reiki session could last up to 30 minutes/more or less. To allot appropriate time to discuss any questions, comments or concerns with the practitioner before and after the session, it is recommended to schedule a 45-60 minute session.

Relaxing Position

You will be asked to lay down on a massage table, on the floor, or even in a comfortable seated position. You will be fully clothed except for your shoes. You may also be asked to remove or loosen your belt so that your breathing is not restricted in any way. It is best to choose loose-fitting garments to wear on the day of your appointment. Wearing natural fabrics is best (cotton, wool, or linen). You may also be asked to remove any jewelry (rings, bracelets, pendants, etc.) prior to the session, so consider leaving these items at home.

Relaxing Atmosphere

Reiki practitioners will often create a relaxing atmosphere with the use of blankets for your warmth and gentle music in the back ground. Freely communicate with your practitioner when you feel moved to. Otherwise, encourage yourself to come into a meditative state of objective observation of the sensations in the body and mind so you can focus more on relaxing the body with every breath.

Hand positions

The Reiki practitioner will place their hands lightly on different parts of the body. Some practitioners will follow a predetermined sequence of hand placements, allowing their hands to rest on each body placement for 2 to 5 minutes before moving on to the next. Empathic practitioners will freely move their hands in no particular order to the areas where they "feel" Reiki is most needed.

Meditation and Reiki

Meditation is a valuable tool for relaxation and stress reduction. Learning to meditate teaches you how to calm your mind and your body as it further empowers you allowing you more control over your body. It does not require any special equipment or complicated techniques. Meditation is for everyone.

When Reiki is combined with meditation the body is better enabled to heal itself mentally, physically and spiritually.

Meditation and Reiki have shown positive results for:
• lowering blood pressure
• relieving stress and pain
• increasing focus
• decreasing anxiety
• improving sleep
• improving clarity of mind

If you are about to have a Reiki session it will enhance your results if you allow a few minutes to meditate before you meet with your practitioner or meditate while receiving Reiki. Remember, it does not require any specific time guideline or posture to simply quiet your mind and just be; with practice you will find yourself meditating naturally for longer periods each time.

It is suggested that you try to meditate each day at the same time and in the same quiet spot. Don't give up if at first it seems that surfacing thoughts are preventing you from relaxing - just let them come and go while you just breath slowly with your eyes closed. Even as little as five minutes of being still allows your mind, body and spirit to relax.

What is the cost of a session?

Reiki practitioners are not 'healers', they are merely compassionate facilitators, encouraging the body to relax and utilize it's abilities to heal itself, physically, mentally and emotionally. You are welcome to give a donation for the practitioners 'time' if you feel moved to. Suggested donation for the practitioners 'time' is between $10 - $50 for an hour session.

Where can I learn to be a practitioner?
